Lessons from Japan for Northern Ireland’s food and drink sector
How can Northern Ireland’s food and drink businesses improve productivity, make better use of technology and maintain consistently high standards? Our June 2026 Food Technology Mission to Japan offered valuable insights into these questions.
Through visits to leading manufacturers and the FOOMA food machinery and technology exhibition, the mission explored practical applications of automation, robotics and artificial intelligence. The findings highlight opportunities to automate packing and product movement, improve demand forecasting and strengthen quality inspection.
A strong message emerged from the factory visits: well-planned production flow, rigorous maintenance, exceptional cleanliness and a culture of continuous improvement are central to efficient operations. Some factories achieved impressive standards using equipment that had been carefully maintained and updated over decades.
For Northern Ireland businesses, these lessons offer ideas for addressing labour pressures, managing costs and improving competitiveness. The report brings together examples to help businesses consider where technology and process improvements could deliver the greatest benefit.
The trip was delivered as part of the Advanced Food and Drinks Manufacturing Network, supported by InvestNI and the Northern Ireland Food and Drinks Association.
